Pachelbel was an organist and also a leading composer of Protestant church music. Only a handful of his chamber works have survived. The most important are the six Suites for two violins and continuo in which he explored the technique of scordatura (re-tuning the strings to different notes for special effects). This Canon has achieved immense popularity, albeit often in overblown arrangements for massed strings. The three violin parts are in strict counterpoint, each playing exactly the same music at two-bar intervals over 28 repetitions of the bass ostinato. There are just five instruments here—three violins, organ and theorbo, without bowed cello or bass—all that Pachelbel would have required. The Gigue forms a lively conclusion, the folk-fiddling style of the imitative violin writing providing a complete contrast to the more learned style of the Canon.

Pachelbel était un organiste et un important compositeur de musique religieuse protestante. Seules quelques unes de ses œuvres de musique de chambre ont survécu. Les plus importantes sont les six Suites pour deux violons et basse continue, dans lesquelles il explore la technique de scordatura (qui consiste à changer l’accord des cordes pour obtenir des effets spéciaux). Ce canon est devenu immensément populaire, hélas souvent sous la forme d’arrangements excessifs pour grand orchestre à cordes. Les parties des trois violons suivent un strict contrepoint, et chacun d’entre eux joue exactement le même thème à deux mesures d’intervalle sur 28 répétitions de la basso continuo. Nous avons ici cinq instruments, trois violons, un orgue et un théorbe, et pas de violoncelle ou de contrebasse joués avec l’archet, rien d’autre que ce qu’aurait demandé Pachelbel. La gigue forme une conclusion animée dans laquelle le violon imite un style folklorique en contraste complet avec le style plus érudit du canon.

In dieser Aufnahme sind lediglich fünf Instrumente vorhanden—drei Violinen, Orgel und Theorbe ohne Violoncello oder Baß—genau das, was Pachelbel benötigt hätte. Die Gigue bildet einen lebhaften Abschluß durch eine Notenschrift im volkstümlich fiedelnden Stil der imitierenden Violine, der in völligem Kontrast zu dem gelehrteren Stil des Kanons steht.
