The Theme and variations in C sharp minor Op 55 is a kind of pendant to the Romantic Sketches for the Young, Op 54, which the publisher Zimmermann had requested in the hope of generating increased sales for his aloof and recondite protégé. Although Medtner undertook the task with some reluctance, he didn’t stint on his skills of craftsmanship in its execution. The theme is a slightly prim minuet in ‘ancient style’ albeit with a few of the composer’s subtle harmonic twists. The variations follow the classical mould in as much as they clearly trace the melodic and harmonic outline of the theme as a template (as opposed to the more free variations in the two Improvisations, Op 31 No 1 and Op 47). This fastidious approach does not preclude the introduction of a deeper and more philosophical note in an eloquent passacaglia (Variation 5), redolent of the hymns of the Russian Orthodox church which are increasingly evident in Medtner’s later works.

Le Thème et variations en ut dièse mineur, op. 55, est une sorte de pendant des Esquisses romantiques pour la jeunesse, op. 54, commande de l’éditeur Zimmermann dans l’espoir de faire monter les ventes de son protégé distant et difficile à comprendre. Bien que Medtner ait entrepris cette tâche à contrecœur, il n’a pas ménagé son talent pour la mener à bien. Le thème est un menuet légèrement guindé dans le «style ancien» mais avec quelques uns des coups de théâtre harmoniques subtils du compositeur. Les variations suivent le moule classique dans la mesure où elles prennent pour modèle les idées mélodiques et harmoniques du thème (par opposition aux variations plus libres des deux Improvisations, op. 31 no 1 et op. 47). Cette approche fastidieuse n’exclut pas l’introduction d’une note plus profonde et plus philosophique dans une passacaille éloquente (Variation 5), qui évoque les hymnes de l’Église orthodoxe russe, de plus en plus évidents dans les dernières œuvres de Medtner.

Das Thema mit Variationen in cis-Moll op. 55 ist eine Art Pendant zu den Romantischen Skizzen für die Jugend op. 54, um das der Verleger Zimmermann gebeten hatte, in der Hoffnung, den Absatz der Werke seines distanzierten und schwer verständlichen Protégé zu steigern. Obwohl Medtner sich mit etwas Widerwillen auf diese Aufgabe einließ, hielt er doch in der Ausführung nicht mit seiner Kunstfertigkeit zurück. Das Thema ist ein etwas förmliches Menuett im „alten Stil“, das jedoch mit einigen subtilen harmonischen Wendungen des Komponisten versehen ist. Die Variationen sind insofern im klassischen Stil angelegt, als dass sie deutlich den melodischen und harmonischen Konturen des Themas folgen (im Gegensatz zu den freieren Variationen in den beiden Improvisationen op. 31 Nr. 1 und op. 47). Dieser penible Ansatz schließt jedoch nicht das Einführen einer tiefgehenderen und philosophischeren Note in einer beredten Passacaglia (5. Variation) aus, die an die Hymnen der russisch-orthodoxen Kirche erinnert, die in den späteren Werken Medtners eine immer wichtigere Rolle einnahmen.
