Completed in 1889 and first published in 1947 in the Russian complete edition, this uncomplicated but charming mazurka in F major already possesses traits of the more mature composer. It would be hard to find a precedent for the scurrying minor section of this work, which returns at the end, interrupting the conventional recapitulation. Scriabin’s playing with the alternately raised and lowered fourth degree may be derived from the modal intonations of Chopin’s Op 24 No 2, but here the alterations remain securely within a major–minor tonality. The waltz-like repetitions at the end recall Chopin’s Op 18.
