The first version of Il penseroso
– later revised for the second book of the Années de pèlerinage
– has not been published, and the manuscript does not actually bear a title, but it does contain the same epigraph – a quatrain by Michelangelo which appears in the published collection. There are many minor differences between the two versions, but the intense expression of this simply-laid-out work remains constant.
