This anonymous prelude in G major (Mixolydian mode) was identified as Byrd’s by Oliver Neighbour in 1973. It is probably a late work. Some of Byrd’s other preludes seem linked with pavans or galliards and at least one was associated with a fantasia, but this work is not known to have been associated with any particular piece. However, nothing suggests that preludes could not also be used to introduce grounds or sets of variations.
