Among Fauré’s friends was the music critic of Le Temps, Pierre Lalo; after Lalo’s wife Noémi died, Fauré dedicated his eleventh nocturne, an exquisite lament in F sharp minor, to her memory. Its modal, incantatory theme seems to hark back to the plainchant that Fauré studied at the Niedermeyer School. Like No 10, it explores one predominant mood, with a second idea bringing a slight yet understated new angle.
