Fauré stayed in post at the Conservatoire for the duration of World War I. He was bitterly disappointed when, in 1920, the institution finally ousted him, aged seventy-five. Yet now he could devote himself exclusively to composition for the first time. An ‘Indian summer’ was the result, its unexpected stream of masterpieces including his thirteenth and final barcarolle, cast in the key of C major. Written in between his second piano quintet and second cello sonata, it shares with them a luminous spirit in which simplicity and complexity become two sides of the same coin.
