Tallis published this miniature masterpiece in a collection meant to show off English music to foreigners. Its rich sonority, metrical ambiguity and odd shifts of harmony are indeed all quintessentially English. The words are drawn from Roman Catholic service-books as used in Italy and France, and celebrate Christ the Redeemer.
