James Hook’s clarinet concerto was never published. It survives in the composer’s autograph score, once in the collection of W H Cummings and now in the Nanki Library, Tokyo. It is dated 1812 and was probably written for the concerts at Vauxhall Gardens; Hook was resident organist and composer there for forty-six summers, from 1774 until 1820. The work is still basically in the galant style, though the clarinet-writing is much more elaborate and wide-ranging than Mahon’s, with frequent forays into the chalumeau register, and the slow movement has a Beethovenian sense of drama, contrasting severe string tuttis with more mellifluous solos in a way that is oddly similar to the slow movement of Beethoven’s fourth piano concerto. Hook returned to a more conventional and old-fashioned idiom for the virtuoso finale, though there are some pleasing and original textures in the last episode, where the clarinet’s arpeggios accompany a series of village band imitations in the orchestra.

Jamais publié, le concerto pour clarinette de James Hook survit dans la partition autographe du compositeur, pièce de la collection de W. H. Cummings désormais conservée à la Nanki Library de Tokyo. Daté de 1812, ce morceau fut vraisemblablement écrit pour les concerts des Vauxhall Gardens, où Hook fut organiste et compositeur durant quarante-six étés, de 1774 à 1820. Malgré une écriture pour clarinette beaucoup plus ample et élaborée que celle de Mahon, avec de fréquentes incursions dans le registre du chalumeau, l’ensemble demeure fondamentalement de style galant; le mouvement lent présente un sens beethovénien du drame, de sévères tutti de cordes contrastant avec des solos plus mélodieux d’une manière étrangement identique au mouvement lent du quatrième concerto pour piano de Beethoven. Hook revint à un style plus conventionnel et suranné pour le finale virtuose, même si le dernier épisode renferme des textures agréables et originales, où les arpèges de la clarinette accompagnent une série d’imitations de fanfare villageoise dans l’orchestre.

Es ist mit 1812 datiert und wurde wahrscheinlich für Konzertaufführungszwecke in den Vauxhall Gardens komponiert, wo Hook 46 Sommer lang in der Zeit von 1774 bis 1820 Hausorganist und -komponist war. Das Werk ist vornehmlich im galanten Stil geschrieben, wobei der Klarinettenpart weitaus anspruchsvoller und weitreichender ist als der bei Mahon, mit häufigen Exkursen in das Chalumeauregister. Der langsame Satz ist darüber hinaus von Beethovenscher Dramatik und stellt harte Streicher-Tutti wohltönenderen Soli kontrastreich gegenüber und dies auf verblüffend ähnliche Weise wie Beethoven im langsamen Satz seines Vierten Klavierkonzerts. Hook greift für das virtuose Finale auf eine konventionellere und altmodischere Ausdrucksform zurück, obgleich die letzte Episode einige nette und originelle Strukturen aufweist, in denen die Arpeggios der Klarinette eine Reihe von Dorfkapellenimitationen des Orchesters begleiten.
