One of these works is known under the potentially misleading title Fragments; the piece is not fragmentary, and the Russian title ‘Oskolki’ means ‘fragments’ in the sense of shards—of a broken mirror, for example. This was the first of the three pieces to be published, appearing in a 1919 edition of the American magazine The Etude, which was aimed at music teachers. This failed to bring the piece to wider public attention. Despite its major key, a forlorn mood of nostalgia or regret is unremitting.
