'Herrick has once again shown that his command of the Bach idiom is as total as any other contemporary organist's … An impressive addition to a milestone collection' (Classic CD)

'An indispensable collection and one I should not be happy to be without' (Organists' Review)

'Bach at his most tuneful and diverting and Herrick's style is particularly suited to them' (Soundscapes, Australia)
The sentiments of Crüger’s hymn are ‘Jesus, my joy, my jewel, how long has my heart longed for you, who will protect me from my enemies’. The first part of an extended fantasia on the chorale melody is in the form of a fugue built around successive lines of the melody, but at the half-way point a section marked ‘dolce’ brings a change of tempo. This gentler and more pastoral mood marks the point in the chorale where the words speak of the ‘Lamb of God’. The music is freed from the constraints of the melody, following only the harmonic outline of the chorale setting.

from notes by Ian Carson 1996
