Ludwig van Beethoven’s Für Elise dates from 1808 or 1810 and is a small chip indeed from the workshop that in the latter year produced, for example, the opus 95 string quartet. It is a popular and appealing piece, however, first published as late as 1867. The manuscript is lost, but it may have been inscribed ‘Für Therese’, signifying Therese Malfatti to whom Beethoven seems to have proposed (unsuccessfully) in 1810.

Für Elise («Lettre à Élise» – 1808 ou 1810) 5 de Ludwig van Beethoven est un bien modeste copeau pour un atelier d’où sortirent, en 1810, des œuvres comme le quatuor à cordes, op.95. Il s’agit cependant d’une pièce populaire et séduisante, dont la première publication dut attendre 1867. Le manuscrit, perdu, portait peut-être la mention «Für Therese» – en l’occurrence Therese Malfatti qui, en 1810, aurait éconduit Beethoven et sa demande en mariage.

Ludwig van Beethovens Für Elise stammt von 1808 oder 1810 und ist wahrhaftig ein kleiner Hobelspan aus jener Werkstatt, die beispielsweise 1810 das Streichquartett op. 95 hervorbrachte. Es handelt sich nichtsdestoweniger um ein beliebtes und ansprechendes Stück, auch wenn es erst 1867 veröffentlicht wurde. Die Urschrift ist verschollen, doch könnte sie die Inschrift „Für Therese“ getragen haben, ein Hinweis auf Therese Malfatti, der Beethoven offenbar 1810 einen abgewiesenen Heiratsantrag machte.
