For Lux aurumque Whitacre decided to have another poem translated into another language altogether before he set it. And unusually, it was not from a dead language into the vernacular, but the reverse. According to Whitacre, Edward Esch is ‘a recluse, in the truest sense of the word … born sometime in the early ’70s, but rarely making a public appearance’. A short poem of his was translated into Latin by a close friend of the composer, Charles Anthony Silvestri. Perhaps, like Stravinsky with his Oedipus Rex, Whitacre was drawn to the ritual antiquity of Latin? ‘Yes, I’m in love with Latin, the sounds of the vowels, the consonants, the logic of it all, the ancient quality it has. It just felt right to translate the text.’

Pour Lux aurumque Whitacre décida de faire traduire un poème dans une langue complètement différente avant de le mettre en musique. Et, pour une fois, il s’agit de traduire une langue vernaculaire en langue morte—et non l’inverse. Selon Whitacre, Edward Esch est «un reclus, au sens le plus vrai du terme, né au début des années 1970 et n’apparaissant que rarement en public.» Un ami intime du compositeur, Charles Anthony Silvestri, traduisit un des courts poèmes d’Esch en latin. Peut-être Whitacre fut-il, comme Stravinsky avec son Oedipus Rex, attiré par l’antiquité rituelle du latin. «Oui, je suis amoureux du latin, les sonorités des voyelles, des consonnes, la logique de tout cela, sa vertu ancienne. Ça tombait pile pour traduire ce texte.»

Bei Lux aurumque entschied sich Whitacre, ein gesamtes Gedicht in eine andere Sprache übersetzen zu lassen, bevor er es vertonte. Ungewöhnlicherweise war es nicht von einer toten Sprache in die Muttersprache, sondern andersherum. Nach Whitacre ist Edward Esch „ein Einsiedler, im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes … er wurde irgendwann in den frühen siebziger Jahren geboren, taucht aber selten in der Öffentlichkeit auf“. Ein kurzes Gedicht von ihm wurde von einem engen Freund des Komponisten, Charles Anthony Silvestri, ins Lateinische übersetzt. Fühlte sich Whitacre, wie ja schon Strawinsky in seinem Oedipus Rex zuvor, womöglich zur rituellen Altertümlichkeit der lateinischen Sprache hingezogen? „Ja, ich liebe Latein, den Klang der Vokale, die Konsonanten, die gesamte Logik, die altertümliche Aura. Ich hatte einfach das Gefühl, dass man das Gedicht übersetzen sollte.“
