The Overture begins with the imposing but ponderous Mastersingers' theme, music in total contrast to the 'Lyric motif' representing artistic freedom. This lyric melody is overtaken by the majestically four-square Mastersingers' March which develops into a sweeping theme symbolic of their brotherhood. A brief passage expressive of Walther's yearning for Eva prefaces his prize-winning song before the music surges to a climax where several of the main themes are combined, with the prize song itself symbolically borne above them.
