The
Étude pathétique in B minor, Op 124, is, as its title implies, an agitated affair: impassioned, vehement, even tragic, chromatically inflected (and afflicted), with grand gestures and dramatic alternations of tempo. But as a piece of rhodomontade it is carried off with fine style.
