It seems that Schubert took Lachner under his wing, not exactly as a pupil, but as something of a protégé. An indication of this is the publication of Lachner’s Der Schmied in the Wiener Zeitschrift of 25 September 1827. This short song is smuggled into the tail-end of a supplement where Schubert’s song Der blinde Knabe, D833, only takes up one-and-a-half of the two available pages. One can imagine Schubert persuading his friend Johann Schickh, editor of the Zeitschrift, to give the young composer a boost.
