This song appeared as a supplement to the Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode in 1835. Surprisingly, there is no sign of counterpoint in this music which is very much in the style of the Beidermeier lied before Schumann, in modified strophic form with rather too few musical intricacies. Sechter dedicated a composition, a Fugue in C minor, to Schubert’s memory soon after the composer’s death. The younger composer had wanted to learn from Sechter, but it is clear that Sechter had little wish, or aptitude, to learn from Schubert.
