Berger’s songs are mostly simple and are clearly meant for amateur performance. Nevertheless, they have a terse kind of effectiveness and greater sophistication than a preliminary reading first reveals. Des Baches Lied is an exception: from the beginning of this song we sense something deep and profound in the oscillations of the unusual piano-writing. The result is more moving than we can possibly expect.
