Reviews

‘In their performance The Tallis Scholars have presented their chosen repertoire in the way they have always done best—as a sound world of profound beauty’ (Gramophone)

‘A disc of quite exceptional, at times heart-stopping, beauty. While there may be other Pärt recordings in this, his 80th birthday year, it is difficult to imagine there being a finer one’ (International Record Review)» More

‘Peter Phillips’s group, chief specialists in Renaissance vocal music, come to this repertoire with special gifts. The forces are modest, just two voices to a part, perfect for spreading clarity and light … every note, heard singly or in combination, hits home with supreme force … this is a gorgeous and inspiring album’ (The Times)» More

‘An essential recording, not to be missed’ (Sinfini Music)» More

'Truly exceptional performances, whose transparency, virtuosity and sheer vocal perfection are beyond compare' (Musica, Italy)» More
With the same steady, syllabic declamation as The woman with the alabaster box, Tribute to Caesar was written as a companion piece—also setting narrative from St Matthew’s Gospel—to mark the 350th anniversary of the Karlstad Diocese in Sweden. Of particular note is the way Pärt fractures the vocal line, picking out single notes for different voice parts to contribute to the broader texture; a kind of hocketing or pointillism that the composer makes his own.
