The Sonata in D minor, Kk9, is perhaps the most popular of all Scarlatti’s sonatas, and was already so in the nineteenth century when it earned the nickname ‘Pastorale’. The gentle swaying rhythm needs to move without hurry. A lot of basic things are essential to playing this piece: beauty of tone, cantabile style, a feeling for dance, articulation, evenness of fingerwork in the runs, trills, sensitivity to harmonies and their progressions, and perhaps above all a certain poignancy of feeling which for me is most evident in the final bars. In the late 1980s a (perhaps?) earlier version of this sonata was discovered by Giorgio Pestelli in Turin, and the last bar contained a descending arpeggio in the right hand, including the mediant F. What a good idea it was to take that out and remain on a unison D!

C’est peut-être la plus populaire de toutes les sonates de Scarlatti et c’était déjà le cas au XIXe siècle lorsqu’elle a acquis le surnom de «Pastorale». Le doux rythme oscillant doit évoluer sans hâte. Beaucoup de choses fondamentales sont essentielles pour jouer ce morceau: beauté du son, style cantabile, sens de la danse, articulation, régularité digitale dans les traits, trilles, sensibilité aux harmonies et à leurs progressions, et peut-être surtout un sentiment poignant qui est pour moi particulièrement évident dans les dernières mesures. À la fin des années 1980, une version (peut-être?) antérieure de cette sonate fut découverte par Giorgio Pestelli à Turin et la dernière mesure contient un arpège descendant à la main droite, avec le fa, la médiante. Quelle bonne idée de l’avoir retiré et de rester sur ré à l’unisson!

Der Sonate d-Moll, Kk9, ist dies die vielleicht populärste Sonate Scarlattis überhaupt und war bereits im 19. Jahrhundert sehr beliebt, als ihr der Beiname „Pastorale“ verliehen wurde. Der sanft wiegende Rhythmus muss ohne Eile voranschreiten. Viele elementare Dinge sind für dieses Stück notwendig: Tonschönheit, Kantabilität, ein Sinn fürs Tänzerische, Artikulation, Gleichmäßigkeit in den Läufen, Triller, ein Verständnis für Harmonien und ihre Fortschreitungen und, vielleicht am wichtigsten, eine gewisse Schmerzlichkeit im Ausdruck, die meiner Auffassung nach am stärksten in den letzten Takten hervortritt. Gegen Ende der 1980er Jahre entdeckte Giorgio Pestelli eine möglicherweise ältere Version dieser Sonate in Turin, in der im letzten Takt ein absteigendes Arpeggio in der rechten Hand vorkommt, wobei auch die Mediante F erklingt. Es war doch eine glückliche Entscheidung, das herauszunehmen und auf dem D zu bleiben!
