I think it’s important to consider how Mozart was making use of the sounds of the new fortepianos of the time (in particular the Stein pianos in these years), and to feel his excitement about what was now possible. Having played modern copies of them, I immediately noticed the different colour in each register, the clarity of the bass, and the silvery tones of the high notes (most evident in variation 4). The delicate, singing, but precise touch needed to play the fortepiano can and should be carried over to the modern piano.
The next movement is a minuet with some tricky hand-crossing in the trio. In 2014 an amazing thing happened: half of the manuscript of this sonata (previously thought lost) turned up in a library in Budapest—a treasure indeed! In it, the last note in the right hand of bar 3 of the minuet is an A, not a C sharp. I discovered this before recording the work, but just couldn’t hear the A in my mind. If Mozart were alive, that’s one of the things I would ask him about!
Now we arrive at the famous ‘Alla turca’. In his opera The abduction from the Seraglio (probably written shortly before K331), Mozart had already used a lot of Turkish-inspired music which was popular at the time. Fortepiano-makers at the end of the eighteenth century were even adding a ‘janissary’ pedal that activated a miniature drum and cymbals, which are perfect for this ‘Turkish march’. (Unfortunately, my twenty-first-century Fazioli doesn’t have that!) This movement is often played too fast: it’s only allegretto. The piccolo was part of the Turkish military band, and it’s not hard to imagine it playing the running notes in the middle section. The fun-loving Mozart certainly went to town with this piece.
