The allegro of Sonata No 5 in G major, K283, is like a breath of fresh air on a sunny day. Its opening bars will bring smiles and many a fond recollection to all, perhaps more than any other Mozart sonata. There is much here for the student to learn and work on: how to separate the melody from the accompaniment in the opening; how to play evenly in the right hand while the bass has those unison octaves which must be shaped; precise observance of the articulations; fitting in those annoying trills at the end of bars 43 & 44; separation of the parts in bars 45 & 46 and 48 & 49. None of that is easy, but it must sound effortless.

The lovely, poised andante needs a great deal of artistry to come alive. If you don’t take it at a good walking pace, you will get stuck on those opening four Cs and have nowhere to go. The development section is particularly beautiful with its pleading and sighing dialogue, while the ascent to F major in bar 28 lifts the heart.

Up until now this sonata is quite manageable, even for the amateur. The concluding presto changes that (if you take it at the necessary zippy tempo). The development is terrific, switching to D minor and then with torrents of notes coming down the keyboard in the right hand. The left hand has to keep pace as well and be just as lyrical at times. The coda is a bit of a laugh since it consists of only two cadential chords. Smiles all round!

L’allegro de la Sonate nº 5 en sol majeur, K283, est comme un souffle d’air frais par un jour ensoleillé. Ses premières mesures feront sourire et rappelleront bien des souvenirs agréables à tous, peut-être davantage que toute autre sonate de Mozart. Il y a là beaucoup à apprendre et à travailler pour l’étudiant: comment séparer la mélodie de l’accompagnement au début; comment jouer posément à la main droite sur ces octaves à l’unisson de la basse qui doivent être modelées; l’observation précise des articulations; l’intégration de ces trilles agaçants à la fin des mesures 43 & 44; la séparation des parties aux mesures 45 & 46 et 48 & 49. Rien de tout ceci n’est facile, mais doit sembler naturel.

Le bel andante posé requiert beaucoup de talent artistique pour prendre vie. Si vous ne le prenez pas à un bon rythme de marche, vous serez bloqué sur ces quatre do initiaux et ne pourrez aller nulle part. Le développement est particulièrement beau avec son dialogue implorant et gémissant, alors que la montée vers fa majeur à la mesure 28 remonte le moral.

Jusqu’à présent, cette sonate est parfaitement gérable, même pour l’amateur. Ce n’est pas le cas du presto final (si vous le prenez au tempo plein d’entrain qui est nécessaire). Le développement est formidable, passant en ré mineur et ensuite avec des torrents de notes qui descendent le long du clavier à la main droite. La main gauche doit aussi suivre le rythme et être parfois juste aussi lyrique. La coda est assez drôle car elle se compose seulement de deux accords cadentiels. Des sourires à profusion!

Das Allegro der Sonate Nr. 5 G-Dur, KV 283, ist wie ein frischer Wind an einem sonnigen Tag. Die ersten Takte werden allen ein Lächeln ins Gesicht zaubern und viele schöne Erinnerungen wecken, vielleicht mehr noch als die anderen Sonaten Mozarts. Hier gibt es für den Klavierschüler viel zu lernen und zu üben: wie man zu Beginn die Melodie von der Begleitung trennt, wie man gleichmäßig in der rechten Hand spielt, während der Bass jene Unisono-Oktaven hat, die gestaltet werden müssen, die genaue Beachtung der Artikulationen, das Einfügen jener lästigen Triller am Ende der Takte 43 & 44, die Trennung der Stimmen in den Takten 45 & 46 und 48 & 49. Das alles ist nicht einfach, aber es muss mühelos klingen.

Das reizvolle, ausgeglichene Andante benötigt viel Kunstfertigkeit, um lebendig zu werden. Wenn man es nicht in einem guten Schritttempo nimmt, bleibt man auf den ersten vier Cs stecken und kommt nicht mehr weiter. Besonders schön ist die Durchführung mit ihrem flehenden und seufzenden Dialog, während der Aufstieg nach F-Dur in Takt 28 das Herz erhebt.

Bis hierhin ist diese Sonate auch für Laien recht gut zu bewältigen. Das ändert sich im abschließenden Presto (wenn man es in dem nötigen flotten Tempo nimmt). Die Durchführung ist grandios: die Musik wechselt nach d-Moll und dann strömen die Töne in der rechten Hand über die Tastatur. Die linke Hand muss ebenfalls mithalten und zuweilen ebenso lyrisch auftreten. Die Coda ist ein kleiner Scherz, da sie nur aus zwei kadenzierenden Akkorden besteht, was allseits für Lächeln sorgt.
