Traditionally a destination for Scandinavian immigrants, the northern state of Minnesota is home to generations of choir-loving Lutherans and it contains some of the best university choirs in the country, none more notable than that of Concordia College directed by René Clausen, one of a number of prominent composer-conductors in American academia. Tonight eternity alone sets a modified verse of the poem ‘Dusk at Sea’ by Thomas S Jones in the composer’s trademark neo-romantic language, and captures a feeling of contented solitude in a vast empty space.

Destination traditionnelle des émigrés scandinaves, l’état septentrional du Minnesota abrite ainsi des générations de luthériens amateurs de chœurs et l’on y trouve certains des meilleurs chœurs universitaires du pays, le plus remarquable étant celui de Concordia College, dirigé par René Clausen, l’un des grands compositeurs-chefs de chœur du monde universitaire américain. Dans la langue néo-romantique typique de ce compositeur, Tonight eternity alone met en musique des vers modifiés du poème «Dusk at Sea» de Thomas S. Jones et reproduit un sentiment de solitude satisfaite, dans un vaste espace vide.

Der nördliche Bundesstaat Minnesota zog hauptsächlich die skandinavischen Immigranten an, so dass Generationen von sangesfreudigen Lutheranern und einige der besten Universitätschöre dort angesiedelt sind, von denen der Chor des Concordia College der wohl berühmteste ist. Er wird von René Clausen geleitet, der zu den prominenten Komponisten-Dirigenten der akademischen Welt Amerikas zählt. Tonight eternity alone ist eine Vertonung einer modifizierten Strophe des Gedichts „Dusk at Sea“ von Thomas S. Jones in der charakteristischen neoromantischen Tonsprache des Komponisten, die ein Gefühl zufriedener Einsamkeit in einem riesigen Leerraum darstellt.
