It was in about 1824 that Chopin wrote a set of variations (assuming he really was the composer; some sources cite it as a spurious work): the Variations in E major on ‘Non più mesta’ from Rossini’s
La Cenerentola for flute and piano. Chopin never wrote for the flute again (if he did at all), and perhaps we can see why.
