It was in about 1824 that Chopin wrote a set of variations (assuming he really was the composer; some sources cite it as a spurious work): the Variations in E major on ‘Non più mesta’ from Rossini’s La Cenerentola for flute and piano. Chopin never wrote for the flute again (if he did at all), and perhaps we can see why.

Ce fut aussi vers 1824 que Chopin rédigea le corpus de variations (à supposer qu’il en fût réellement l’auteur, certaines sources tenant cette série pour apocryphe): les Variations en mi majeur sur «Non più mesta» de La Cenerentola de Rossini pour flûte et piano. Chopin ne récrivit jamais pour la flûte (si tant est qu’il l’ait bien fait) et l’on comprend peut-être ici pourquoi.

Ungefähr um 1824 schrieb Chopin ein Variationenwerk (vorausgesetzt, er ist wirklich der Komponist; einige Quellen bezeichnen es als unecht): Die Variationen E-Dur über „Non più mesta“ aus Rossinis La Cenerentola für Flöte und Klavier.
