Antonia Raab, who died in 1902, was a pupil of Liszt, and her poetry which inspired Schlaflos! (‘Sleepless!—Question and Answer’) has not come down to us. But it is easy to imagine the thought behind this miniature, where the tossing and turning is resolved by a simple transformation of the theme and the arrival of tonality which brings rest. Liszt offers some alternative passages in the piece, so two versions are recorded here. The first is the main text, where sleep is a distant silence; the second has a shorter, more frenetic questioning, and a safer resolution, almost like snoring!

Antonia Raab, morte en 1902, était une élève de Liszt; sa poésie, qui inspira Schlaflos! («Insomnie!—Questions et réponses») n’est pas parvenue jusqu’à nous. Mais il est facile d’imaginer l’idée derrière cette miniature, dans laquelle l’agitation est résolue par une simple transformation du thème et l’arrivée de la tonalité qui amène le repos. Liszt offre quelques passages alternatifs dans la pièce, et cet enregistrement présente donc deux versions. La première est le texte principal, où le sommeil est un silence éloigné; dans la seconde, les questions sont plus courtes, plus frénétiques, et la résolution plus sûre, un ronflement presque!

Die 1902 verstorbene Antonia Raab war eine Schülerin von Liszt. Ihr Gedicht, das als Inspiration zu Schlaflos! Frage und Antwort gedient hat, ist uns nicht überliefert. Man kann sich jedoch leicht den Grundgedanken dieser Miniatur vorstellen, in der das rastlose Hin- und Herwälzen durch einfache Wandlung des Themas und Übergang zu einem Klangcharakter beendet wird, der für Ruhe sorgt. Liszt bietet in diesem Stück mehrere alternative Passagen an, darum wurden hier zwei Versionen eingespielt. Die erste beruht auf der Hauptvorlage, in der sich Schlaf als fernes Schweigen darstellt; die zweite verfügt über eine kürzere, heftigere Frage und eine sicherere Antwort, fast schon ein Schnarchen!
