The Hymn O salutaris hostia is thought to be an early work. Here Byrd fully exploits his technical mastery of interlocking imitative phrases; the polyphony gradually intensifies and with the words ‘bella premunt’ climaxes with trumpet-like entries.

L’hymne intitulé O salutaris hostia passe pour une œuvre plus ancienne. Dans cet exemple, et de la manière la plus totale, Byrd exploite sa maîtrise technique sous forme d’entrelacement de phrases imitatives; la polyphonie augmente petit à petit et, sur les mots «bella premunt» explose dans une série d’entrées qui retentissent comme un concert de trompettes.

Von der Hymne O salutaris hostia wird angenommen, daß sie eines seiner frühen Werke ist. Hier verflicht Byrd in technischer Meisterschaft und besonders detalliert imitative Phrasen; die Polyphonie wird nach und nach intensiviert und erreicht bei den Worten „bella premunt“ mit trompetenähnlichen Einsätzen ihren Höhepunkt.
