There is no doubt about the authenticity of the eight-part Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied. It dates perhaps from the New Year 1727, and is a setting of words from Psalm 149, verses 1–3 and Psalm 150, verses 2 and 6, separated by a chorale movement based on verse 3 of the chorale ‘Nun lob, mein Seel’ in Choir 2, which is answered in Choir 1 by a free setting of a chorale text related to ‘O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort’. The three-movement structure of the work suggests that Bach thought of it as a sort of choral concerto, and this is borne out by the mighty first movement, which is laid out in the ritornello plan: statements of the theme in each of the main keys visited are separated by modulating episodes. This was this piece that Mozart heard during his famous visit to St Thomas’s Leipzig in 1789, as reported by Friedrich Rochlitz:

Hardly had the choir sung a few measures when Mozart sat up, startled; a few measures more and he called out: ‘What is this?’ And now his whole soul seemed to be in his ears. When the singing was finished he cried out, full of joy: ‘Now, there is something one can learn from!’

And learn from it Mozart certainly did, as his Requiem shows.

L’authenticité du motet à huit parties Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied est indubitable. Datant peut-être du Nouvel An 1727, il exprime en musique un texte emprunté au psaume 149, 1–3 et au psaume 150, 2 et 6, avec, intercalé, un mouvement de choral fondé sur le verset 3 du choral «Nun lob, mein Seel» au chœur 2, auquel répond (au chœur 1) une libre mise en musique d’un texte de choral rattaché à «O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort». La structure en trois mouvements de cette œuvre suggère que Bach envisageait une sorte de concerto choral, comme le confirme le puissant premier mouvement et son plan avec ritornello: les énonciations du thème dans chacun des tons principaux visités sont séparées par des épisodes modulants. Ce fut ce morceau-là que Mozart entendit lors de sa fameuse visite à Saint-Thomas de Leipzig en 1789, telle que nous la rapporta Friedrich Rochlitz:

À peine le chœur eut-il chanté quelques mesures que Mozart se redressa, étonné; encore quelques mesures et il s’écria: «Qu’est-ce que c’est?» Voilà que son âme semblait tout entière dans ses oreilles. À la fin du chant, il s’exclama, rempli de joie: «Il y a maintenant quelque chose dont on peut apprendre!»

Et apprendre, Mozart le fit assurément, comme le montre son Requiem.

Im Falle der achtstimmigen Motette Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied, die möglicherweise für Neujahr 1727 entstand, gibt es keinerlei Zweifel an der Authentizität. Vertont sind Verse 1–3 aus Psalm 149 sowie Verse 2 und 6 aus Psalm 150; dazwischen steht ein Choralsatz mit der dritten Strophe von „Nun lob, mein Seel“, gesungen von Chor II, worauf Chor I mit einer freien Vertonung des Choraltexts antwortet, der aus „O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort“ stammt. Diese dreisätzige Anlage lässt vermuten, dass Bach das Werk offenbar als eine Art Choralkonzert betrachtete. Deutlich wird dies mit dem mächtigen ersten Satz, der in Ritornell-Form angelegt ist; das Thema erklingt in allen Haupttonarten und alterniert jeweils mit modulierenden Episoden. Dieses war das Stück, welches Mozart bei seinem berühmten Besuch in der Leipziger Thomaskirche im Jahre 1789 hörte, wie Friedrich Rochlitz berichtet:

Kaum hatte der Chor einige Takte gesungen, so stutzte Mozart … da rief er: „Was ist das?“—und nun schien seine ganze Seel in seinen Ohren zu seyn. Als der Gesang geendigt war, rief er voll Freude: „Das ist doch einmal etwas, woraus sich was lernen läßt!“

Und wie sehr Mozart aus dieser Musik lernte, zeigt sein Requiem.
