The last three volumes of our Schubert Edition (there are two more to come after this one) are devoted to songs written in the last years of the composer's life and contain some of his greatest, though not necessarily best-known Lieder. The two immortal songs in this volume, universally known and loved, are Lachen und Weinen and Du bist die Ruh, from 1822 and 1823 respectively. But other masterpieces are here too - Schwestergruss, Dass sie hier gewesen, and Totengräbers Heimwehe - as well as a clutch of rare songs and partsongs.

Sleeve Notes
'McGreevy's Lachen und Weinen is simply the best performance I know. No lover of Schubert's genius should miss this CD.' (International Record Review) 'Revelatory' (The Guardian) 'Throughout the disc, Graham Johnson's accompaniments are typically illuminating with numerous touches of detail glossed over by many pianists. And, as ever, his vastly comprehensive notes, amounting to no less than a book, are in a class of their own.' (BBC Music Magazine) 'Even if you haven't been collecting this first-rate series of recordngs, the quality of the singing and the appealing variety of the programme provide a delightful encounter with Schubert's lyric genius' (bn.com)
