Here at last is Winterreise in our Schubert Edition. Little needs to be said about this supreme masterpiece of Western
music, written at the end of Schubert's life when he encountered the poems of Wilhelm Müller in a contemporary publication.
(Müller also wrote Die schöne Müllerin, set by Schubert and issued as Volume 25 of our Schubert Edition, sung by Ian
Bostridge, and subsequently the winner of a Gramophone Award.) The first complete recording of Winterreise was made
in 1933 by Gerhard Hüsch and Hanns Udo Müller. Since then there have been another 140 recordings by some of the world's
greatest singers of songs including Hans Hotter, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Herman Prey, Gérard Souzay, Peter Schreier,
to name only a few of those who recorded it more than once. This recording is destined to join the most exalted of them.
