This recording enables the listener to hear the much-loved cycle Die Schöne Müllerin from a new
perspective. Included are the five poems Schubert chose not to set (and one omitted by Müller
from his published collection). These are read by the spiritual father of all Lieder singers,
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.
Schubert is said to have come across the Müller book in the library of Benedikt Randhartinger
and was so taken with the poetry that he simply pocketed it and went home. Randhartinger called
on him the next day to retrieve his property and was astonished to receive from the composer not
only apologies for his strange behaviour but the first songs already composed. The resulting cycle
has inspired singers and listeners in equally strong measure ever since.
Recorded on 10 December 1994 (poems); 26, 27, 28 October 1995 (songs)

GRAMOPHONE AWARD WINNER PENGUIN GUIDE ROSETTE GRAMOPHONE EDITOR'S CHOICE / CRITICS' CHOICE
'Bostridge's peculiarly beseeching voice enshrines the vulnerability, tender feeling and obsessive love of the youthful miller … A soul-searching interpretation which now ranks with those tenor versions [listed above] as a recommendation' (Gramophone) 'Ian Bostridge produces youthfully golden tone and gives an eagerly detailed account to match even the finest rivals' (The Guardian) 'Another marvellous disc in an eminently collectable series' (The Independent) 'A particularly high point of achievement in the magnificent Hyperion Schubert Song Edition' (Opera Now) 'The performance by the young Bostridge is a miracle … Vocally he is immaculate, singing with a shining lyricism that recalls Wunderlich, but he is infinitely more characterful than the great German tenor: he brings the naive, impetuous, jealous, ultimately despairing and suicidal boy vividly to life as no other tenor on record and his youthful vulnerability is heart-rending. This wonderful disc makes you listen to Schubert's masterly cycle with refreshed ears. It's destined for my Christmas list and, surely, for fistfuls of awards' (The Sunday Times) 'Un disco imprescindible' (CD Compact, Spain) 'Graham Johnson could not have chosen more wisely from among the tenors available to him today'(Fanfare, USA)
