Introduction |
Hyperion's Record of the Month for February 2012 unites Anthony Marwood, Lawrence Power and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Ilan Volkov in a triple bill of the Britten Violin Concerto, Double Concerto & Lachrymae, each thrilling work finding its interpreters on captivating form. And Lawrence Power enters a very different world, this time in the company of Simon Crawford-Phillips, for charged performances of Shostakovich Music for viola and piano.
Debut solo recordings on Hyperion from two exciting sopranissimos this month: Maria Grazia Schiavo joins with Auser Musici and Carlo Ipata in an exploration of Cherubini Arias & Overtures, and Alice Coote's recital partnership with Graham Johnson offers up a much-anticipated and perfectly crafted English Songbook, The Power of Love. Our solo piano recording this month is rather special: the Granados Goyescas sit at the pinnacle of Spanish 'nationalist' art, and in Garrick Ohlsson find an immaculate and committed exponent. Contrasting re-issues this month: the concluding pair in The King's Consort's wonderful 'Bach's Contemporaries' series reveals wondrous Sacred Music by Johann Kuhnau and Jan Dismas Zelenka, while proceedings are brought riotously to their knees by Sarah Walker and Roger Vignoles 'in recital'—Blah blah blah indeed. |
