The Hallé Orchestra

The Hallé gave its first concert in 1858 under the baton of its founder Sir Charles Hallé. Until his death in 1895 Sir Charles conducted almost every concert, and performed as piano soloist at many. For the vast majority of its history the Hallé’s home in Manchester was the Free Trade Hall, which was destroyed during the Manchester Blitz and then rebuilt, opening with a triumphant season of concerts in 1951. The Hallé performed its last concert there in1996 before moving into its magnificent new home The Bridgewater Hall. The Hallé remains determined constantly to seek ways to enhance and refresh what it undertakes. We aspire to provide artistic leadership—through performance standards, artistic understanding and education and training, working with our partners in Manchester and beyond.
