Paul Lewis (piano)

Paul Lewis is internationally recognized as one of the leading pianists of his generation. His many awards include the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Instrumentalist of the Year Award, the South Bank Show Classical Music Award, a Diapason d’or de l’année in France, two Edison Awards in Holland, the 25th Premio Internazionale Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Italy, and two Gramophone awards including the 2008 ‘Record of the Year’. Between 2005 and 2007 he performed the complete Beethoven piano sonatas throughout Europe and North America, and his recorded cycle for Harmonia Mundi received tremendous critical acclaim. His recording of Schubert’s Winterreise with Mark Padmore was chosen as a Recording of the Year by the Daily Telegraph, and his recent recordings of the Beethoven piano concertos were selected as ‘Record of the Month’ by both Gramophone and Classic FM Magazine.

In 2010 Paul Lewis became the first pianist to perform all five Beethoven piano concertos in a single BBC Proms season. He is a regular guest at many other prestigious venues and festivals, including the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg, the Roque d’Anthéron Piano Festival, the Klavier Festival Ruhr, and London’s Wigmore Hall, where he has appeared on more than forty occasions. He has also given recitals at the Royal Festival Hall in London, Toppan Hall Tokyo, Symphony Centre Chicago, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Tonhalle Zurich, Auditorio Nacional Madrid, Kennedy Center Washington, and the Vienna Konzerthaus, and has made two extensive recital tours of Australia. He has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras and conductors, including Sir Colin Davis, Bernard Haitink, Sir Mark Elder, Sir Charles Mackerras, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Adam Fischer, Andris Nelsons, Marin Alsop, Jirví Bevlohlávek and Daniel Harding, and has recently toured with the London Symphony, Bournemouth Symphony, Lausanne Chamber and Australian Chamber orchestras.
