Alice Coote (mezzo-soprano)

Renowned on the great recital, concert and opera stages of the world, Alice Coote’s career has taken her from her beginnings in the north of England—in local singing festivals and playing the oboe in the Cheshire Youth Orchestra—to being regarded as one of the great artists of today. The recital platform is central to her musical life. Alice performs throughout Europe and the US, at Wigmore Hall, the Concertgebouw, and the Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York, among many others. Judith Weir’s song cycle The Voice of Desire was written for her.

Acclaimed in concert in particular for Mahler, Strauss, Berlioz, Mozart, Handel and Bach with orchestras such as the LSO, Boston Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Hallé and Concertgebouw, she has collaborated with conductors including Gergiev, Dohnányi, Maazel, Jurowski, Elder and Boulez.

Alice Coote is in demand worldwide on the operatic stage, interpreting male and female operatic roles. These include Dejanira (Handel’s Hercules), Poppea, Carmen, Charlotte (Werther), Lucretia, Marguerite (Berlioz’s La damnation de Faust), Penelope (Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria), Octavian (Der Rosenkavalier), Composer (Ariadne auf Naxos), Orfeo, Idamante (Idomeneo), Nerone (L’Incoronazione di Poppea), Maffio Orsini (Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia), Hansel, Prince Charming (Massenet’s Cendrillon), Sesto (Giulio Cesare in Egitto), Sesto (La clemenza di Tito), Ruggiero (Alcina) and Ariodante. She has performed these roles in the UK including at Glyndebourne and the Royal Opera House, and at opera houses abroad including the Paris Opéra and the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Amsterdam, Munich, Frankfurt, Salzburg Festspiele, Toronto, Chicago Lyric Opera, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Alice Coote has made many recordings, including songs by Schumann and Mahler, Handel’s Messiah and Mahler’s Symphony No 2, Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos, and Handel’s The Choice of Hercules. She has also appeared in many opera productions on DVD.
