Alban Gerhardt (cello)

Alban Gerhardt’s profound musicality and charisma have made him one of the most sought-after cellists of his generation. Born into a musical family in Berlin, he studied with Markus Nyikos, and later with Boris Pergamenschikov and Frans Helmerson.

Alban Gerhardt’s career was launched in 1991 with an invitation to play with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and since then he has worked with many of the world’s leading orchestras and conductors such as Kurt Masur, Christoph von Dohnányi, Christoph Eschenbach, Sir Neville Marriner, Marek Janowski, Sir Colin Davis, Michael Tilson-Thomas, Fabio Luisi, Sakari Oramo, Neeme Järvi, Christian Thielemann, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Andris Nelsons.

Alban has performed throughout Europe—including five concerto appearances at the BBC Proms in London—the USA and Japan with orchestras including the Royal Concertgebouw, Bayerische Rundfunk, Leipzig Gewandhaus, London Philharmonic, Philharmonia, NHK Symphony, and the Cleveland, Boston and Chicago Symphony Orchestras. In 2014 he performed Unsuk Chin’s Cello Concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Myung-Whun Chung. As a recitalist and chamber musician, he has appeared in many prestigious series and at major festivals. His curiosity for the cello’s repertoire has led him to research and record many lesser-known works.

Alban Gerhardt plays a cello by Matteo Gofriller.
