Magnificat

Magnificat was formed in 1991 and specialises in the restoration and performance of neglected choral masterpieces of the 16th and 17th centuries. Many of its young professional singers are former Oxford and Cambridge choral scholars or were trained at the countryʼs leading music conservatoires. The choir ranges in number from four to forty voices and has performed a wide range of music, both a cappella and with its own orchestra of period instruments, with the intention of matching the style of performance with the particular demands of the chosen work.

In association with Linn Records, Magnificat has undertaken many recording projects, including a series of recordings called ʻThe Golden Ageʼ, which will provide an anthology of European church music of the Golden Age of the 16th and 17th centuries. The first disc comprises motets by Rebelo, Gesualdo, Guerrero, Victoria and Josquin together with Allegriʼs Miserere, and Palestrinaʼs Stabat mater. Also for Linn is a highly acclaimed recording of Victoriaʼs Officium Defunctorum 1605, named a 1997 ʻCriticsʼ Choiceʼ by Gramophone Magazine and chosen by The Rough Guide as one of its ʻ100 Essential Classical CDsʼ. Most recently Magnificat has recorded the first volume of music by the neglected Spanish master, Philippe Rogier, including the Missa Ego sum qui sum and funeral motets.

Magnificatʼs international profile is growing with its discography: the group has toured to the Athens Festival in Greece, to Palma and throughout the United States.
