Arcangelo

Arcangelo’s collective energy and spirit have generated a flood of five-star reviews, sparked audience ovations and prompted invitations to perform at the world’s leading venues and festivals. The band, which has taken the musical world by storm since its creation in 2010, comprises outstanding young musicians under the dynamic leadership of its Artistic Director and founder Jonathan Cohen. Its ethos is ruled by a determination to apply the deep listening skills and artistry of chamber-music-making to every piece in its repertoire, from trio sonatas to oratorios. Arcangelo was the first named ‘Baroque Ensemble in Residence’ at Wigmore Hall and has twice appeared at Carnegie Hall. Recent concert highlights include sell-out performances of Handel’s Theodora at the BBC Proms (2018) and the Wiener Konzerthaus (2020), a critically acclaimed venue debut at L’Auditori in Barcelona (2019), and the launch of its own artist development scheme for talented ensemble players, the Arcangelo New Ensemblists (2020). Arcangelo’s extensive and much-decorated discography on Hyperion includes two Gramophone Award-winning recitals with Iestyn Davies (including their first volume of Bach cantatas), further recital collaborations with Alina Ibragimova, Christopher Purves and Nicolas Altstaedt (BBC Music Magazine Award 2017), and stand-alone projects ranging from John Blow’s odes to J S Bach’s Mass in B minor.
