Jonathan Ayerst began his musical studies as a chorister at Wells Cathedral. At the age of fourteen he was a semi-finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition and he was a prize-winner at the Ettlington International Piano Competition in West Germany. In 1989 he took up a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music where he won the top piano prize in his first year. His numerous awards and prizes have enabled him to continue studying with Nellie Akopian, and he has given recitals around the country.
