Steven Isserlis has made many recordings for Hyperion, and his award-winning discography reflects his diverse interests in repertoire. A renowned exponent and supporter of contemporary music, he has premiered many new works, including Sir John Tavener’s work for cello and orchestra The Protecting Veil, of which Isserlis also made the first recording, and Wolfgang Rihm’s Concerto in One Movement, written for him and premiered at the Salzburg Festival. As a celebrated performer and interpreter of earlier music, he collaborates frequently with period-instrument orchestras, as well as giving recitals with fortepiano and harpsichord.
He has also enjoyed much success as a writer and performer for children, and his two books about the lives of the great composers—Why Beethoven Threw the Stew and Why Handel Waggled his Wig—are published by Faber & Faber and have been translated into many languages. With composer Anne Dudley he has written three musical stories for children (published by Universal Edition in Vienna).
Steven Isserlis takes a strong interest in musical education, and is Artistic Director of the International Musicians’ Seminar in Cornwall, England, where he gives annual masterclasses. He has been the recipient of many honours, including a CBE in recognition of his services to music, Time Out’s Classical Artist of the Year award, and the Schumann Prize of the City of Zwickau (Schumann’s birthplace).
