The Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana (Orchestra of Italian Switzerland) grew out of the Orchestra della Radiotelevisione della Svizzera Italiana, which was founded in Lugano in 1935; it has existed in its current form since 1991. Stravinsky, Hindemith, Berio, Honegger and Richard Strauss all worked with the orchestra, as did the conductors Ernest Ansermet, Leopold Stokowski, Eugene Ormandy, Sergiu Celibidache, Hermann Scherchen, Wolfgang Sawallisch and Riccardo Chailly. Its music director is now Alain Lombard.
