Adelina Oprean (violin)

Adelina Oprean was born in Deva, Romania, in 1955. She began playing the violin at the age of seven at the Music School in Sibiu, helped by her father, himself a keen amateur violinist. In 1972 she entered the Music School in Bucharest and later the Porumbescu Conservatory under Stefan Gheorghiu. During this time she performed in all the major cities in Romania, Germany and Yugoslavia. In 1979 she attended the International Menuhin Academy in Gstaad where she studied with Alberto Lysy, Robert Masters and Yehudi Menuhin. Her final studies were with Sandor Végh in the Salzburg Mozarteum Academy. Adelina Oprean has received many prizes, including First Prize at Colmar in 1977 as well as being a prizewinner in the Piano Trio Competitons in Geneva and Belgrade and in the Joachim Violin Competition in Austria in 1981. In 1982 she won First Prize in the Carl Flesch International Competition in London. She has performed as a soloist and in chamber music concerts throughout Europe and appeared with Yehudi Menuhin and Alberto Lysy in the Bach Concerto for three violins at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. In 1982 she returned to the South Bank to perform the Beethoven concerto for her Royal Festival Hall debut with the Royal Philharmonic conducted by Norman del Mar. In April 1983 she made her Wigmore Hall debut with her brother, Justin Oprean. She has since appeared at the Nottingham, Llandaff, Perth and City of London Festivals and has performed concertos with the London Mozart Players, the South West German Radio Orchestra, the Zürich Tonhalle Orchestra and the Bergen Symphony Orchestra. On Hyperion she has recorded violin concertos by Fiorillo and Viotti (CDH55062), and Haydn Violin Concertos (CDH55007) with the European Union Chamber Orchestra.
