For many decades The Sixteen has been one of the jewels in the musical crown of Britain. The choir was founded by Harry Christophers in 1977 with a clear vision: it would concentrate on the heritage of early English polyphony, the masterpieces of the Renaissance as well as a diversity of twentieth century choral work. Today the choir is enhanced by the existence of a baroque orchestra, The Symphony of Harmony and Invention, and through it Harry Christophers brings fresh insights to the music of Purcell, Monteverdi, JS Bach and Handel. Many prize-winning recordings reflect this wide range of work.
The Sixteen and the orchestra now enjoy a world-wide reputation. They have performed at the Vienna Musikverein, the Brisbane, Covent Garden, Istanbul and Lucerne festivals, the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center, New York, and the Lisbon Opera in the new 1998 production of Monteverdi's Return of Ulysses. Other triumphs include the Aix-en-Provence, Aldeburgh, City of London, Prague Spring and Salzburg festivals.
