Allan Clayton (tenor)

Allan Clayton studied at St John’s College, Cambridge and at the Royal Academy of Music in London where he was the recipient of numerous awards including ‘The Queen’s Commendation for Excellence’ and an inaugural Sir Elton John Scholarship. Two years after graduating he was appointed an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music. The BBC invited Allan to join the New Generation Artist scheme from 2007 to 2009, and in 2008 he received both the John Christie Award for his Glyndebourne Festival debut as Albert Herring, and a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship.

On stage, Allan’s roles have included Ferrando in Così fan tutte; Bénédict in Béatrice et Bénédict; Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Belmonte in Die Entführung aus dem Serail; Camille in Die Lüstige Witwe; Lampwick in the premiere of Jonathan Dove’s The Adventures of Pinocchio; and the title role in Albert Herring. He has also appeared in concert with orchestras including the English Concert, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony, Britten Sinfonia and Academy of Ancient Music.

Allan has given lieder recitals at the Cheltenham Festival, the Perth International Arts Festival in Australia, the Aldeburgh Festival, and London’s Wigmore Hall. For Hyperion he has recorded Handel’s Messiah and Lukaszewski’s Via Crucis, both with Britten Sinfonia and Polyphony conducted by Stephen Layton.
