‘This is a bizarre and fascinating piece: and the disc is long-awaited, because The Tallis Scholars have been planning it for some years. It may be the greatest challenge they have faced so far … it is hard to fault Peter Phillips's reading of this massive work. With only eight singers on the four voices, he takes every detail seriously. And they sing with such conviction and skill that there is hardly a moment when the ear is inclined to wander. As we have come to expect, The Tallis Scholars are technically flawless and constantly alive. Briefly, the disc is a triumph. But, more than that, it is a major contribution to the catalogue, unflinchingly presenting both the beauties and the apparent flaws of this extraordinary work. Phew!’ (Gramophone)

‘The great strength of The Tallis Scholars' Ockeghem disc is in Peter Phillips's choice of two contrasting Masses … Phillips's approach to the work (as he himself describes it) is more like 'chamber music, gentle and undemonstrative'. Yet the sense of excitement here is none the less palpable in the judicious use of solo voices: listen to the kaleidoscopic changes in the Credo, and exhilarating final melismas. The singers' individual contributions are the touchstone of this splendid reading of Au travail suis, those who want to savour Ockeghem at his boldest really ought to start here. The Tallis's frequently astonishing technical resources have rarely if ever been used to better purpose’ (Gramophone)

‘This disc of inventive and moving music, performed with great affection, demonstrates very clearly what this English Orpheus Series is designed to show—that English music didn't simply die out, swamped by foreign imports, after the death of Purcell’ (BBC Music Magazine Top 1000 CDs Guide)

'Intimate, small-scale performances of mainly familiar titles—including Britten's Ceremony of Carols—by a choir of ten singers. Occasionally more heft is needed' (BBC Music Magazine)
