Mozart: Horn Concertos
Studio Master: CDA68097  Studio Master FLAC & ALAC downloads available

‘Even if you have the classic Dennis Brain recordings with Herbert von Karajan … as surely almost all Mozarteans do, there's a place for an alternative set on the natural horn and with the advantage of modern recording … this recording made me hear more new aspects of the concertos and especially of the quintet than any other. It’s emphatically not just for the period-instrument brigade’ (MusicWeb International)» More

Mozart: Horn Concertos

‘Eastop's playing has the effect of making the modern horn sound a little, er, boring. He doesn't attempt to smooth over the differences between open and stopped notes, effortlessly switching between legato lines and rollicking hunting calls. It's an instantly appealing, very vocal sound … this is a feel-good disc in every way; Eastop's cheeky virtuosity eliciting gasps as well as giggles … Eastop sails through its difficulties, resisting the temptation to rush through the witty finale. It sounds all the better for it. Intelligent notes, sensitive accompaniments and excellent sound—what's not to like?’ (TheArtsDesk.com)» More

Pärt: Choral Music

‘There is no shortage of recitals of Arvo Pärt's shorter choral works in catalogue, but anything by Polyphony is always welcome … Polyphony's sound is, as always, so rich and beautiful that there is no sense of anything missing’ (BBC Music Magazine)» More

Schumann: Humoreske & Sonata Op 11
CDA67618

‘Angela Hewitt has made a number of recordings of the music of Robert Schumann … It’s easy to forget, because Hewitt has made so many recordings of Bach on the piano that even lovers of the harpsichord appreciate, that she made her reputation with the Romantic and French repertoires. Another bonus is that you can follow up this Schumann recording with that of the Second Sonata and the other works’ (MusicWeb International)» More

‘Another Scriabin winner from Lane who takes the music's finger-breaking, chromatically intensified complexities in his stride with a beguiling, micro-inflected sensitivity that favours poetic intimacy over primeval catharsis’ (BBC Music Magazine)

‘Captivating, alluring performances from Lane, who captures the Chopinesque incandescence and brevity of the early Préludes with a magical sureness of touch that clarifies and illuminates even the blackest of pages’ (BBC Music Magazine)

Scriabin: The Complete Préludes, Vol. 2

‘As Scriabin's invention begins to take flight with his later Préludes, Piers Lane responds with fleet-fingered, mercurial playing that captures the music's super-heated compression with meltingly phrased precision and alacrity’ (BBC Music Magazine)

Tallis: Ave, rosa sine spinis & other sacred music
Studio Master: CDA68076  Studio Master FLAC & ALAC downloads available

‘This very enjoyable series continues its sequence of motets and hymns, with a Mass as the centrepiece—this time the setting for four voices, the most direct and pared down of Tallis's output … The Cardinall's Musick give a very well-judged account of one of Tallis's most economical works … for the rest, there are splendid performances here: with O salutaris hostia, Laudate Dominum and Euge caeli porta the composer is in his essential idiom, to which The Cardinall's Musick respond with poise and precision, and they are equally at home in the settings from Archbishop Parker's Psalter, where a forthright unanimity is required. A very welcome issue, then; and it's always nice to known that there's more to come’ (Gramophone)

Tallis: Ave, rosa sine spinis & other sacred music
Studio Master: CDA68076  Studio Master FLAC & ALAC downloads available

‘As always with Hyperion the notes contribute considerably to the overall excellence … the new recording can hold its head high in [other labels'] company. Carwood takes all but the Sanctus and Benedictus faster than Summerly without sounding at all hurried … Even if you already have the complete Signum/Brilliant Classics set or many of the individual albums from it, the new Hyperion and its predecessors should be on your wish list. The four volumes issued to date cover almost half of Tallis’s extant output. Roll on the rest’ (MusicWeb International)» More

Victoria: Ave regina caelorum & other sacred music
CDA67479  Download only

‘If you painted me into a corner and forced me to choose between Victoria and Palestrina, I’d have to choose the former, much as I love the latter. If I could have just one Victoria recording on my Desert Island, this, from Westminster Cathedral Choir directed by Martin Baker with Robert Quinney (organ) would be very high on the list … this is music that will transport you to a higher plane’ (MusicWeb International)» More
