February 2022 Releases

With Bach Cantatas Nos 35 & 169, February's Record of the Month sees Iestyn Davies once again giving voice to some of the composer's most sublime music. Gramophone praised the 'intelligence and deep sensitivity' of his earlier volume, and this successor—with couplings by Buxtehude and Schütz—is on an equally exalted level. As before, the richly imaginative accompaniments come courtesy of Jonathan Cohen and the outstanding musicians of Arcangelo. Some three centuries later, the musical language may be different, but Choral works by Jonathan Dove, Judith Weir & Matthew Martin convincingly demonstrates that music written for performance within a liturgical setting remains a vital, living tradition. Many of these works were conceived for Westminster Abbey Choir which, under the direction of James O'Donnell, brings a unique and unassailable authority to these accounts.

It's now sixteen years since Angela Hewitt embarked on a new series which this month reaches its glorious conclusion with Beethoven Piano Sonatas Opp 106 & 111. What more appropriate final chapter could there be than the pairing of Beethoven's last sonata with an equally inspirational interpretation of the 'Hammerklavier'? As we predicted at the outset, this has indeed become a very important series of recordings.

There are five suites in the collection, fantasias and dances intricately woven together into minor miracles of intimate chamber music. Rich bass continuo comes from the archlute and theorbo of David Miller and the harpsichord of Silas Wollston.

New albums on Signum Classics bring us Schubert's Die schöne Müllerin in a new recording by star countertenor Iestyn Davies and pianist Joseph Middleton, and, from the Houston Chamber Choir, Circlesong by Bob Chilcott. With important contributions from the Treble Choir of Houston, the composer describes the work as 'a life-cycle piece based on First Nations poetry from North America'.

Newly re-issued on the Cala Signum label we have Stokowski Philadelphia rarities. Set down between 1928 and 1940, this collection captures the Philadelphia Orchestra during a golden age of landmark recordings, focusing on the more remote musical byways explored by conductor Leopold Stokowski with many works not previously—or subsequently—recorded anywhere else.
