Steven Isserlis, accompanied by the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Paavo Jarvi, makes a strong case for Prokofiev’s rarely-recorded first Cello Concerto. Isserlis draws out great contrasts in mood and tone, with lyrical moments that are quite sublime. Shostakovich’s more familiar First Cello Concerto is driven forward by fiery energy. Rounded off by Prokofiev’s March from Music for Children.
