Jēkabs Jančevskis

born: 18 April 1992
country: Latvia

Jēkabs Jančevskis is one of the most prominent figures among Latvia’s young composers. He teaches composition at the Riga Cathedral Choir School, and directs the Pāvuls Jurjāns Music School symphony orchestra and the choir Anima mea.

For a recording of When, in collaboration with the Riga Cathedral Choir School Mixed Choir and cellist Kristaps Bergs, Jančevskis won the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers Music Prize in the ‘under thirty’ category.

His oeuvre includes choral music, symphonic works and music for theatre and film, in addition to some chamber music. He draws inspiration from historical events, existential questions and contemporary developments, all of which he tends to examine with both great emotional truth and irony.

Jēkabs graduated from the Riga Cathedral Choir School’s conducting programme, and holds a Master’s degree from the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music. The deciding impulse for him to become a composer arose through the encouragement of Ēriks Ešenvalds, who taught him composition at the Cathedral School.

He is demanding of the poetry he selects for his compositions, and appreciates laconic poetry, which, in his opinion, offers scope for larger and more elaborate musical ideas.
