Tabakov, Emil (conductor)

Emil Tabakov (conductor)

Emil Tabakov was born in 1947 in the city of Ruse in Bulgaria. He studied conducting, composition and double bass at the Bulgarian State Academy of Music in Sofia, making his professional conducting debut aged eighteen with the Ruse Philharmonic Orchestra.

He has held positions as artistic director or principal conductor of most major Bulgarian orchestras: the Sofia Soloists Chamber Orchestra (1979–1988) and Philharmonic Orchestra (1988–2000), the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra (2008–2015) and, outside Bulgaria, the Belgrade Philharmonic (1994–1999) and Bilkent Symphony orchestras (2002–2008). He has guest conducted such orchestras as the Orchestre national de France, the Orchestre national de Lille, the Seoul Philharmonic and the São Paolo Symphony, and has conducted opera in Bulgaria, France and Italy (at La Fenice).

His repertoire is wide-ranging, extending from the baroque to the modern. An extensive discography concentrates on music from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and includes highly regarded symphony cycles by Brahms and Mahler (with the Sofia Philharmonic) and Shostakovich (with the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra), besides works by Beethoven, Bruckner, Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Scriabin, Strauss and Rachmaninov.

Emil Tabakov remains active as a composer. His output to date includes nine symphonies, as well as concertos for piano, viola, cello, double bass, and percussion.
