Rosie Hilal (narrator)

Rosie Hilal is a multilingual actor, artist and activist based in London. Born into a multiple culture household, she holds the belief that art can increase understanding and communication between human beings. As a result, she loves working with different media and pushing the boundaries of artistic form, whilst searching for universal truths in the classical canon.

Growing up in Germany and France with Turkish and English-Scottish parents, she learnt to communicate in ways that shape her relationship to words and sound today. After gaining a scholarship for the BA Acting course at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, and debuting at the Royal Shakespeare Company, Rosie went on to work at the Royal National Theatre, Shakespeare’s Globe, the Wanamaker and in the West End.

Structural inequalities in the industry urged her to volunteer on the Equity Women’s and Stage Committees where she strove to create a fairer industry for all.

Her film and TV work includes No return for ITV, London Road for the BBC, All the light we cannot see for Netflix, and recently two projects with directors Alfonso Cuarón and Kristin Scott-Thomas.

Collaborations with classical and contemporary musicians at Dartington, Snape Maltings and Easter at King’s pushed her to co-create original scores for her own theatre-making work. She is interested in exploring cultural clashes in music and language, and is possibly the first woman to have retranslated the 17th-century French play Berenice by Jean Racine, adhering to the original 12-beat Alexandrine verse-structure and setting parts of it to music and dance.

Rosie holds a degree in modern and medieval languages from Cambridge University, and acting and singing diplomas from RADA, the Conservatoire du 16ième in Paris and Morley College Opera School. She was chosen to be part of the 2021 JMK young directors’ mentorship programme under Atri Banerjee and can be found on the Young Vic Genesis Directors list.
